Honouring Jing: The Art of Thriving in Midlife

In TCM menopause isn't viewed as a decline, it's known as your Second Spring.

For decades, a woman's Jing (vital essence or deepest energy reserve) is devoted to menstruation, fertility, pregnancy and nurturing life. With the transition into perimenopause and menopause, that energy is no longer directed outward. Instead, it's available to be redirected inward, toward wisdom, vitality, creativity and healthy aging.

This is why many TCM practitioners see midlife as a powerful opportunity to replenish and protect your Jing.

Ways to cultivate Jing during perimenopause and beyond:

• Prioritise warm, nourishing foods. Think soups, stews, bone broth, black beans, black sesame seeds, goji berries and cooked greens. TCM considers these foods deeply supportive of Kidney energy, the system associated with Jing.

• Embrace rest as medicine. Overwork, chronic stress and constantly "pushing through" are believed to drain Jing. Extra sleep, slower mornings and intentional downtime aren't indulgences, they're investments in long-term vitality.

• Keep your feet warm. In TCM, the Kidney meridian begins at the sole of the foot. Warm socks, foot soaks and gentle foot massage before bed can help support relaxation and restorative sleep.

• Practice gentle movement. Yin Yoga, Qi Gong, Tai Chi, walking in nature and mindful stretching help circulate energy without depleting your reserves.

• Breathe deeply and meditate. Focusing awareness on the lower belly (the Dan Tian) can help cultivate a sense of grounding, warmth and inner resilience.

• Support your blood and Yin. Many common perimenopausal symptom, hot flushes, night sweats, dryness, irritability and fatigue are viewed in TCM as signs that Yin and Kidney energy need extra nourishment.

The beauty of the Second Spring is that it invites us to stop measuring our worth by how much we produce and start honouring the wisdom we've accumulated.

Midlife isn't the beginning of less.
